Riding for Heroes: My 100km Operation Cycle Challenge

Last month, I had the privilege of taking part in Operation Cycle – a nationwide fundraising event organised by Help for Heroes. The challenge? Cycle 100 kilometres to support wounded veterans and their families.

I’m proud to say: mission accomplished.

Over the course of the event, I clocked up 100km in the saddle and raised £250 for this incredible cause. While the physical effort was tough at times – especially the last few hills – it was nothing compared to the challenges faced daily by those who have served and now live with life-changing injuries or trauma.

Why I Took Part

Help for Heroes has always held a special place in my heart. As someone with a strong family connection to the armed forces and a member of the Royal Navy Association, I’ve seen firsthand the resilience, sacrifice and bravery of our servicemen and women.

This ride wasn’t just about kilometres or calories – it was about showing solidarity. About giving back in a small but meaningful way to those who have given so much.

The Journey

Training in the run-up was a mix of indoor sessions on the Wahoo Kickr Core and outdoor rides – and yes, the British weather added its own “challenges”! I broke the 100km down into manageable segments, fitting rides in around work and family life. It reminded me how powerful consistency and a strong ‘why’ can be when you’re trying to push through.

Along the way, I shared updates with friends, family, and colleagues – and was truly humbled by the generosity of everyone who donated. £250 might not seem like a life-changing amount, but it all adds up – and contributes directly to ongoing physical and mental health support programmes for veterans.

What’s Next?

This ride has fired up my motivation to keep moving, keep supporting, and keep raising awareness. Whether it’s another cycling challenge, a charity walk, or helping others get involved, I’m in.

Thank you again to everyone who supported me. Together, we’re making a difference.
